Physical Education (PE)
Intent
At Cedarwood, we recognise the importance of providing a high-quality P.E curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It is our intent that all pupils become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We aim to provide wide-ranging opportunities to participate and compete in sport and other activities which build character and help to embed our school values and equip our pupils with the skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and for their future.
Implementation
At Cedarwood, we are committed to the highest standards in PE and have achieved the GOLD Sports Mark in recognition of the high quality provision in our school.
PE is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils in developing a healthy lifestyle. Through the National Curriculum and the 'GetSet4PE' scheme, our curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that enables all children to develop their physical fitness along with their skills and knowledge to achieve their personal best. As part of the Ipswich and South Suffolk School Games Partnership, we are able to participate in a wide range of competitions for our pupils against other schools, festivals, CPD for staff and leadership opportunities for our pupils. Pupils are given opportunities to compete with and against their peers and those in local schools and across the county.
The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives
In addition, we have the following aims for all pupils:
- increased levels of wellbeing and fitness
- confidence in sporting competition
- the ability to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team
- an understanding fairness and equality of play
At Cedarwood, PE is recognised as one aspect of a wider curriculum which help pupils to develop a healthy lifestyle and links are made across with other subjects so that pupils understand the importance and impact of physical activity on their health and wellbeing.
In addition to their PE lessons each week, pupils across the school participate in the Daily Mile. Pupils in Year 4 attend swimming lessons at a local pool, to ensure they can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. Pupils in Year 5 participate in Bikeability sessions, to ensure they can cycle confidently and competently, in readiness for high school.
Impact
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all pupils as well as developing the underpinning values and disciplines P.E promotes, such as self-discipline, responsibility over their own health and fitness, working as part of a team, learning how to communicate and deal with successes and disappointments positively. We intend that the impact of our curriculum is therefore to motivate our pupils to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives now and in the future.
