Science - Intent, Implementation & Impact
Intent
At Cedarwood, we recognise that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world. It is our intention to build upon children’s innate curiosity to develop their knowledge, skills, values and attitudes so that they can explore, understand and go on to shape the world around them.
Implementation We teach the National Curriculum, enhanced by our wider curriculum, which includes Forest Schools, outdoor learning projects and STEM activities, and through this we aim to ensure that all pupils: |
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
In addition to these aims, it is our intent that all pupils:
- develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena
- understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring
- are able to predict how things will behave and analyse causes
Learning is carefully sequenced and structured to ensure scientific knowledge and skills build over time and the following principles shape Science lessons at Cedarwood:
- Promotion of curiosity and engagement in learning
- Regular opportunities for hands-on investigation and exploration
- Encouragement of and opportunities for regular questioning, exploration, observation and testing of ideas
- Development of children’s explanations of their ideas and understanding
- Development of scientific vocabulary
- Explicit links made to previous learning in science and other subjects to build upon prior knowledge and support understanding
- Regular retrieval practice to move learning to the long term memory
Impact:
We aim to equip our pupils to successfully navigate the ever-changing world of science and technology and provide a platform upon which to build their understanding of key scientific concepts. It is our intention to create a culture of high aspiration, which can inspire and motivate the next generation of scientists.
